ERN BOND is pleased to endorse the ARGO Project, an innovative initiative aimed at radically improving the diagnostic pathway for people living with rare diseases.
The project takes its name from Ulysses’ loyal dog in Homer’s Odyssey the only one who recognised his master after twenty years of absence. This powerful metaphor reflects the reality faced by many rare disease patients: a long and exhausting diagnostic odyssey, often spanning years before reaching an accurate diagnosis.
The core ambition of ARGO is to significantly reduce the average time to diagnosis by identifying cross-cutting clinical and non-clinical indicators “red flags” that are common across rare diseases. These signals are intended to become universal alarm bells for general practitioners, paediatricians, primary care physicians, and specialists alike, strengthening the culture of suspicion and enabling earlier referral and diagnosis.
The project has produced a Consensus Document, developed through a rigorous real-time Delphi methodology involving a panel of 55 experts. The manuscript is currently under evaluation in a peer-reviewed journal and will serve as a key tool for spreading knowledge and supporting early diagnosis and disease management.
